Botanical Garden

The Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, founded in 1952, is the largest garden of Spain. In the early fifties the Swedish botanist Eric Ragnor Sventenius proposed building it to the President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. The garden is named in honor of José Viera y Clavijo, canary eighteenth century naturalist, friend of the eminent botanist Cavanilles, and pioneer of the science of nature in the archipelago.

The idea was to build a place to showcase all the botanical wealth of the island, and in turn preserve and protect the Canarian endemic flora. It is mainly dedicated to endemic flowers and plants of the seven islands of the Canary archipelago. It is located in the municipality of Tafira Alta.
